You may wish to make a real go of it and fly to Albury from
Canberra to stay & play the many Murray River
Resorts .
From the Murray you can fly or drive to Melboune as it is only a
2 hour plus drive.
You may also wish to tour the
Snowy Mountains that you can do either from
Canberra or the Murray River where you can also tour the Victorian Alps.
While in the Snowy Mountains, it is a must to
visit Thredbo, the most chic and popular ski region in Australia
The highest mountain in the Alps is only 6500' so in comparison with real mountains, the Alps are no more than mountainous hills.
The Murray River and the Victorian Alps are along the way to Melbourne if you wish to self drive
from Canberra.
